Planning for the future – beyond 2020

Where have the last 10 years gone? A third of my life has passed and I find myself making a list of what I have accomplished and overcome in this time. It isn’t as big as I thought it would be and some things I wonder if I am putting them down for sake of doing so just to fluff it up.

I moved out of home, bought my first property and rescued 2 furbabies which hit the top of the list. I was involved with Roller Derby for about 3 years and represented Australia for 2 years in a row at RollerCon in Las Vegas. From that I made some wonderful friends whom I stay in touch with to this day. I found my ‘family’ in the form of the Echelon, the fans of the band 30 Seconds To Mars and I also got a few tattoos.

Every year I use my annual leave to travel overseas. This is my ultimate goal in life, to see the world. That is 2 to 4 weeks of travel out of 52 weeks in a year – times 10. Less than a year of travelling in a decade in total. I feel I haven’t even scratched the surface of this little blue planet and I do stress I haven’t seen as much of it as I could have. Life is short and precious. So what is a girl to do? Plan like a mofo! Do I organise a heap of little trips close together or larger ones and take a chunk of time off work? Gap year anyone?!

I have never taken advantage of long weekends because of work. I usually sit at home wishing I at least did a grocery shop before the shops closed for public holidays and end up regretting getting take away, usually McDonalds. I follow my friends adventures online wishing I was smart enough to change up my location for the long weekend. Not anymore. I have busted out a calendar for 2020 and marked the long weekends, major events I travel overseas for on a regular basis (Camp Mars and Isle of Man TT Racing for starters) and I found my bucket list I put together from way back when. I have a need to knock this list down whilst I can. Continents, countries, cities, events, you name it. A small fraction I have accomplished but not enough.

From this list I can break down goals and accomplishments I wish to achieve over the next decade and using the 7 areas of empowerment is a top start (link below). Health and finances are most important to accomplish before I can hit the road and see the world. Without those there is no point and my traveller dreams cannot be accomplished.

Over the next month I will still write down my journey from last 10 years. I know one thing for sure, life did not turn out the way I planned it to a decade ago and I did lose track of my dream at times. I have been through a lot and now know not to let it pass me by. With age comes wisdom.

I need to live life to the fullest and now is as good a time as any. Starting today, not tomorrow.
